OBSERVATIONS, Drawings of the Nude by GUY DILL May 13, 2003 (SAN FRANCISCO, CA) – Meyerovich Gallery’s summer exhibition features drawings by Los Angeles artist Guy Dill. This show runs from June 5 through August 16, 2003. Guy Dill has entitled his most recent works of nude female drawings: Observations. These figures feature non-traditional poses and range from large 50” x 40” to small 16” x 14” in scale and interact with the viewer “...like scratchings, cave drawings on nice paper” (Dill, 2003). Robert Flynn Johnson, Curator in Charge at San Francisco Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, describes the drawings of the Nude by Guy Dill:
Guy Dill draws from a live model and the works are about gesture of line and the shifting of weight. The drawings consist of frontal and back views of crouched and reclining figures. In a strong reference to the sculptural implications of these drawings, the broad lines emphasize the weight and volume of the figures. As Guy Dill has stated, “With the bronze sculptures I am making form, with the figure drawings I am observing form...The figures exist in the world of the page. The shift of weight, her lean and the counterbalance, the mass of a thigh, the weight of a knee pushing down on an ankle, these are sculptural things. The physical world and the implied world are drawing tools.” There is an exuberance and confidence in Dill’s vision of the human form that makes these female figures remarkable.
