Marc Chagall: Rare Works

July 30, 2003 (SAN FRANCISCO, CA) – Meyerovich Gallery exhibition features " Marc Chagall: Rare Works". This exhibit includes an extensive collection of paintings, works on paper, etchings and lithographs, more than 50 art works spanning from 1931 to1984. A portion of this collection is from the Artist’s Estate.

This exhibit is comprised of seven unique works, which includes oils, gouaches, and monotype. Among them the oil on panel of Couple devant la colline “Couple in Front of a Hill displaying luxuriant blues, greens, and reds that together create a very serene image of a couple in love amidst the background of a goat afloat in the sky. The enchanted gouache of Bouquet et Nu depicts a man’s head floating in the clouds lovingly adorning a female figure in a lavish garden. The petite Le couple a l’ange portrays with bold oils on canvas an abstract couple in a serene moment of embrace.

Our wide selection of colored lithographs and etchings features such early works as Jacob's Departure for Egypt, from the Bible Suite; mid-career works from the Exodus suite such as Moses Blesses Joshua, from the Story of Exodus; as well as the last group of works completed by the Master, including Country Gathering, which is a vibrant portrayal of a family in a garden.

The exhibition also includes colorful lithographs from very popular suites such as Daphnis and Chloè, Four Tales from the Arabian Nights, L’Odyssèe I and L’Odyssèe II. As well as an original copper plate and color etching entitled De Mauvais Sujets created directly from this plate in 1958.

This exhibition is done in conjunction with the opening of the Marc Chagall exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) on July 26 – November 4, 2003. Marc Chagall painter of dreams and desires was born in Russia before the Revolution. He traveled to Paris as a young man and along with other experimental painters, invented a new art style by blending Cubism, Surrealism and Fauvism, with ancient traditions of Jewish legend and folklore. In swirls of color and light Chagall portrays the lost world of Russian village life, the enchantment of the circus, and the celebrated tales of the Bible, as well as his memories, his loves, and his dreams.
